Work and research experience

Owe Axelsson is the founder and, until year 2010, was the managing editor of the journal Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications (published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd) and is on several other editorial boards.

During the period 1964-1971 he was chairman of the Department of Computer Science, including Numerical Analysis at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, was appointed associate professor in 1964 and professor there in 1973. He held the position as professor in Numerical Analysis at the University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands in the period 1979 - 2004, when he retired. He was a guest professor at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University, Sweden as well as held a position as senior researcher at the Institute of Geonics, Academy of Sciences, Ostrava, Czech Republic. Since 2011 he was also affiliated with King Abdulaziz University at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

He has been a long term visitor to numerous institutes and universities, such as

  • CERN, Geneva;
  • Ecole Polytechnique Federale, Lausanne;
  • University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas;
  • Rice University, Houston, Texas;
  • University of Lund, Lund, Sweden;
  • Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia , Bulgaria;
  • Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida;
  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, California;
  • ELTE University, Budapest, Hungary.

His earlier research dealt with global integration and A-stability and similar topics of a special type of implicit Runge-Kutta methods for ordinary differential equations. During the past 45+ years his research has been devoted more to preconditioning and iterative solution methods for linear and nonlinear partial differential equations, finite element methods, regularization methods for saddle point problems in the context of incompressible flow and mixed variable finite element problems, uniformly convergent methods for singularly perturbed problems, constraint optimization problems, multilevel iteration methods, functional analysis and operator framework for iterative solution of PDE problems and to parallelization issues of iterative solution methods. His latest research was devoted to the solution of coupled fluid flow and porous media problems, optimal control problems constrained by partial differential equations and their efficient numerical solution.

He is listed in the ISI Highly Cited List of Mathematicians.

He is an author of two monographs, one of which has been republished in the SIAM series of Classics in Applied Mathematics, about 190 journal papers, about the same number of proceedings and other papers and editor of thirteen journal special issues and conference proceedings volumes.
