Course description
Fuzzy sets and fuzzy techniques, 7.5 HEC
- Credit points:
- 7.5 HES/ECTS
- Course period:
- February - March 2010
- Aim of the course:
- To give an understanding of how fuzzy set methods can be
used in different fields.
Fuzzy set theory, introduced by Lotfi Zadeh in 1965,
has in recent decades become one of the most useful tools and concepts because
of its applicability in many areas of information sciences and applied
mathematics. Fuzzy sets provide a mathematical framework for the handling of
uncertain and vague information and concepts. Fuzzy sets and fuzzy control
theory have found many practical applications in a range of fields, such as
image processing, expert systems, data mining, signal processing, and
bioinformatics. This course provides the foundations of fuzzy set theory and
fuzzy reasoning, as well as practical hands on experience of fuzzy techniques
in various applications through computer exercises and project work.
- Target group:
- Graduate students in information science related fields, such as
signal processing, bioinformatics, applied mathematics, econometrics, data
mining, and image analysis.
- Recommended background:
-
Basic calculus and linear algebra. Probability theory and multi-dimensional
analysis is a plus. Lab exercises will include basic use of computers.
- Course content:
- Theory: Information uncertainty and information
vagueness, its origin, consequences and usefulness. Definition of a fuzzy set,
operations on fuzzy sets, fuzzy relations and inference rules, triangular norms
and aggregation operators, linguistic variables and fuzzy numbers,
fuzzification and defuzzification principles, features of fuzzy sets.
Applications: Applications of fuzzy sets in information modelling, fuzzy shape
description, fuzzy decision making, fuzzy optimization, fuzzy control, fuzzy
pattern recognition, image processing and data mining, own projects.
- Study format:
- Lectures: 30h. Computer exercises and project work.
- Examination:
- Written exam and project work.
- Venue:
- Centre for Image Analysis, House 2, Polacksbacken, Uppsala
