Thank you for your response. I'd like to question the claim that the list was obtained from previous CNDS conference attendees, since I don't recall attending any such conference (the only academic conferences I have been involved have been held here in Uppsala, and I have been involved as a staff member only, providing demo workstations and Internet connectivity). >Further, if the recepient at Uppsala University does not want to >be in the list to receive information on the CNDS conference, please >send us the e-mail address and name (or names) and we shall notify >the faculty member to immediately remove that entry from his list >of recepients. I'm the postmaster at my department, and I have to date received three calls for papers pertaining to this conference. It would be financially impossible for us to send 50 people to a single conference abroad (or at least a gross misuse of our resources). I don't expect you to know the full name or occupation of each person involved here, but I can mention that the list includes our janitor, administrative staff, computer support staff, teachers, graduate students and full-time researchers alike. Obviously, our janitor isn't a frequent conference attendee... ;-) I hope you can understand that I'm not willing to explain to you exactly which of these recipients don't want to receive your calls for papers, because I can't tell that myself without asking them (except that I may be able to guess the answer for a few of my colleagues)! Since you expect the recipients to be attendees of past conferences only (or even merely invited to attend), I think you have a mailing list contamination problem that may go beyond our particular department. It looks like someone has scanned our university directory pages for e-mail addresses in general, in which case the address for our janitor was of course found too. I would like to ask you _not_ to remove _only_ my e-mail address from your mailing list, as I'm investigating this on behalf of any other involuntary recipients, within our university or elsewhere. I want my address removed at the same time and on the same grounds as you decide to remove our administrative staff and our janitor. If removing them is too difficult for you to do, please leave my address on the list along with them. I'm not saying that your conference is outside the scope of our department (Computer Systems or Information Technology) research area of interest, but I think calls for papers can be distributed more efficiently by sending them to a single contact person per department only, to be redistributed locally at the recipient's discretion. If nobody else from our department has complained already, it's probably because people here are so inundated with e-mail that they simply don't have time to investigate each irrelevant mail they get, but they tend to delete and move on. As postmaster, I feel I have the duty to investigate these matters on behalf of my colleagues without them asking each time. The reason I'm talking about a call for papers distributed two weeks ago is that I have a serious backlog right now, due to the volume of spam reaching us these days. Come to think of it, I do maintain another mail server as well, serving a different domain (csd.uu.se). Please be assured that we >are extremely against spam e-mail and constantly monitor our >servers for any such behavior. I can assure you that your mail server has never been on our list of restricted IP addresses, and given your swift response, I very much doubt I will have reason to list it in the future. I'm in no hurry to resolve this issue, and I'd rather see that you take the time you need to properly investigate the matter and determine the cause of the error, than have you do some quick fixing just to avoid further mail from me. I'm seriously interested in learning why your mailing list was fouled up in this way, so that I can react appropriately when something similar occurs elsewhere in the future. Also, I don't want to interfere with your conference preparations by diverting your attention to a less urgent matter. Please also accept my sympathies with respect to recent terrorist attacks against United States targets. I have relatives in Boston myself, and while I have learned they were not in danger, I'm at a loss for words to describe what I think about this assault on life and our common freedom. If your call for papers had arrived before the 11th of September instead of after it, I probably would have regarded the issue moot and not appropriate to complain about. However, no act of terrorism should be allowed to permanently change the way I do my work, and I hope you feel the same.
