Rooting research - Seedling

Seedling of Scots pine (Pinus sylvstris).

The seedling to the left has the seedcoat remaning on one of the cotyledons. The short needles in the middle are the first primary needles that form on the epicotyl. Epicotyl is the part of the plant that is above the cotyledons. Below the cotyledons are the hypocotyl that often has been used in rooting studies. The light brown root with its apex is at the bottom.
