Etiskkod vid McGill University, Kanada

Studenter vid den naturvetenskapliga fakulteten vid  McGill University  i Kanada har möjlighet att avlägga denna
frivilliga etiskakod i sammband med graduationen:

Hippocratic Oath for Scientists, Engineers and Executives

I vow to practise my profession with conscience and dignity;

I will strive to apply my skills only with the utmost respect for the
well-being of humanity, the earth and all its species;

I will not permit considerations of nationality, politics, prejudice or
material advancement to intervene between my work and this duty to present and
future generations;

I make this Oath solemnly, freely and upon my honour.

(Signed, Dated)

This little note appears on the webpage:
    Dr John Hart and others have proposed an amended second clause of the
    Oath which would then read:

        'I will strive to apply my skills with the utmost respect for the
        well-being of humanity and the integrity of the natural world.

    Dr Hart argues that the clause about respect for all the earth's species would
    present a difficulty for biologists and others.

Obligatoriska etikkurser

För att få examen i flera ämnen krävs dessutom att man har läst en kurs i etik. Kodexen och kurskravet har införts
efter påtryckningar från Kanadensiska Student Pugwash. Mer om deras arbete för etiska koder finns att läsa nedan:

"We finally made some real progress with the ethics courses in our
undergrad degrees.

We realized that it was easier to let each department (chemistry, biochem,
biology etc) make their own arrangements rather than go through the faculty
of science. This is because the requirements for a degree are pretty different
from department to department, as are the number of required credits, so
some departments will save to replace courses, while others can just add one
on. I am officially enroled in biochemistry, so I went to the undergraduate
advisor and wrote up a proposal (one compulsory ethics or philosophy of
science course) and a list of courses at McGill which are already offered
which would be app ropriate. The students voted on it (said yes) and the
professors have also agreed, so now it's just a matter of paperwork.

For info, our degree is 90 required credits, and one course is 3 credits. Most
students take 10 courses a year for three years.  So the ethics course would
be 3 credits of 90, and is a third year course. We decided to make it a third
year course because the first two years of a biochem degree are very very full,
and there is a bit more slack in the last year.

The important bit was that everything was on paper, and that we had a list of
courses, plus the approval of 70% of the undergraduates in our department.
A similar thing is being done by the biology dept."
