In this talk I will present recent work on modeling and simulating individual cell dynamics to better understand developmental processes in the early embryonic stages of the facial regions in mice. In a collaboration with Igor Adameyko's group at KI we have modeled two scenarios using a simple grid-based stochastic cellular automaton approach: 1) the distribution of clonal patterns emerging from single stem cell lines and 2) the growth and scaling of soft cartilage. I will describe the model, as well as some predictions arising from it. I will also briefly discuss recent work in the group on more detailed modeling capturing mechanical interaction between cells in a more direct way.
