Abstract:

This talk provides an overview of the research activities of the mathematical optimization group at the Department of mathematical sciences, Chalmers, and a more focused description of research carried out in two major projects. The first is centered on the optimization of maintenance activities in industry and society, wherein which we have performed theoretical research regarding modelling and complexity, as well as applied work in the areas of jet engine aircraft maintenance, rails and wheels, and power production systems. The second project area is the development of a theoretical framework of hierarchical optimization models under uncertainty in parameters in the definition of the secondary ("lower-level") problem. For this problem we discuss some of the most important theoretical and numerical properties, and describe application work from the areas of cancer treatment, engineering design, and traffic planning and control.
