Querying Heterogeneous Engineering Data
In a distributed engineering environment data are represented
in
many different ways by different systems. The existing commercial
DBMS do not support efficient representation and appropriate
query
language for data formats used in Computer Aided
Engineering (CAE)
systems. Methods and tools are therefore needed
to make it easy to
incorporate new kinds of data in DBMS in a
uniform way.
The main goal of this project is to investigate what database system
extensions are needed in order to efficiently represent and
query
CAE data from different sources and in different formats,
e.g. STEP/
Part 21 and XML.
Status
As part of this project we implemented STAmos
that is an Amos II wrapper
for engineering data in STEP/Part 21 data format. It provides for the
following:
- Automatic translation of
EXPRESS schemas into AMOS II
database
schemas:
Mapping
EXPRESS Information language to Amos II Data Model
( mapping.pdf
);
- Input/ output facilities for data in STEP/Part 21
exchange
format;
- Large matrix data handling;
-
Enabled different kinds of queries over translated
data
(incl. spatial queries)
- Completion of the query
result
and visualization by the means of a CAD system
(I-DEAS,
Pro/ENGINEER)
Cooperation
This project was part of
IEIS ,
Integrated Engineering Information Systems
research program in
cooperation with
Volvo Aero Corp. and Luleå
University
of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering,
Division of Computer Aided Design.
STAmos was used in the research of
PhD students from Luleå University
of Technology.
