Abstract:

An overview of Direct Numerical Simulation of multiphase flow and its application to multiphase mixing layer instabilities and jet atomisation will be give. Volume of Fluid methods combined with heigh functions methods are used in codes such as PARIS and Gerris. They are applied to the study of interfacial wave development in coplanar jets in a setup similar to the LEGI (Grenoble) experiment. The nature of the primary instability observed, and the factors that influence it, are discussed. The subsequent development of the 3D transverse instability is investigated and the results compared to those of Cartellier, Matas and Ben Rayana at LEGI.
