My name is Gunnar Ledfelt and I work PSCI, Parallel and Scientific Computing Institute at TDB and NADA which are the departments of numerical analysis at Uppsala University and Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan in Stockholm.
Currently I'm visiting ICASE/NASA Langley to participate in "Lightning Electromagnetic Effects Modeling Project"

In 1873 Maxwell revised and formulated what was known about electromagnetics and the four equations he compiled are still among the most fundamental descriptions of the nature. However, even though the equations are easy to write down, the solution to a given problem is often very difficult to obtain.

One way of solving the Maxwell equations is to formulate the mathematical and physical problem in a way suitable for a computer. I am doing this by using Finite Differences in Time Domain, also known as the FD-TD method.

I am doing my research together with my colleagues Erik Abenius, Ulf Andersson, Fredrik Edelvik Anders Ålund among others. Our advisor is professor BjörnEngquist.

We are working in the GEMS-project which is a project within the competence center PSCI. The GEMS-project is succeeding the Large Scale FDTD-project in which we were previously engaged.

Within the FD-TD projects my main research topics are 1) thin wires of arbitrary orientation for the FD-TD method and 2) hybrid methods, i.e. Finite Volumes and Finite Elements combined with FD-TD.

A Billion Cells FD-TD Simulation is a good exampe of what we can do with super computers accessible at PDC .

I am using AVS , DX and VTK to visualize our CEM-activity and some nice mpeg movies can be found here.

I am also very interested in absorbing boundary conditions and here you can find some numerical experiments for the scalar wave equation.
