Matterhorn Peak 2007
Samuel and I had planned to do a warm-up hike for our trip to Switzerland. We
ran out of time and ended up doing Matterhorn
peak. This is the Matterhorn in Californian Sierras, not in the European Alps.
Summary: Sam drow to Bridgeport friday night. On Saturday we hiked
up to the nice lake at ~9500 feet and crashed, altitude is not for whimps
living at sea-level. Sunday we woke up at 5 am, did the summit, hiked out,
drow back (I got back around 11pm to Berkeley). It would have been nice to
have had one more day, but you cannot get everything in life.
Google Earth: I tried to save a placemark in Google earth, looking
from the north from Twin Lakes, up Horse Creek towards Matterhorn.
The hike in was beautiful in the beginning. Perfect weather.
After a while the trail was not really there anymore. Still, we needed to
go on to reach the beautiful campspot which is seen in the picture above.
I found a small christmas tree to bring home. Forgot it.
Crossing the glacier was a piece of cake since we brought crampons. This is in
the afternoon, and we actually went up to the far right of the picture.
After the glacier we went up a talus slope. No picture from there, loose,
sketchy stuff. The reward for coming all the way up was...rewarding. :)
I had planned to do the East ridge route. But I could not find it among all
the stones, so we left the rope and climbing gear to go find the easier way
up.

Jacob posing. Make did not believe we would make it so he stayed home. :)
Samuel heading down the steep talus. It is true as they say, it is easier to
go down a sliding slope than up.
Finally back at the real trail.
