Research

My research area is computing education research. My main research interest is how programming students learn and connect theoretical and practical knowledge in the lab, and consequently how teaching can be improved. This is the topic of the T-PIPE project, Theory and Practice in Programming Education, supported by the Swedish Research Council. This was also part of my PhD thesis which I defended in March 2009. This work will be further developed in the BLHOP-project where we will study programming students' learning hands-on and brain-processes.

Other areas where I have published are e.g. on educational issues related to Learning Analytics, Software design, Threshold Concept in Computer Science, MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), Computer Science teachers percpetion of their teaching, and Informal Learning related to Computer Science.

Research groups and Networks

- Member of the UpCERG research group, IT-department, Uppsala University
- Founding member of “Sweden Group”, a research collaboration with seven participants from Sweden (three), UK (one), and US (three). Organizer of the annual Sweden Group research meeting at Uppsala University, 2-4 days, since 2005 (except 2012).
- Participating in Nationellt nätverk för Fenomenografi och Variationsteori
- Participating in the the Nordic Network of Engineering Education Research (NNEER)
- I have taken part in organizing an international research collaboration on MOOCs together with researchers from Sweden (two), Finland (one), China (one) and Australia (two).

When I started as a PhD student members of my research group UpCERG introduce me to researchers and conferences in the Computing Education Research community, and to the community of Phenomenography and Variation Theory. These initial contacts then lead to further research contacts which have developed to my current wide international network. I have so far published 55 different researchers from 12 different countries, I have been invited as guest researcher and to give seminars, and I have invited guest researchers to my research group at Uppsala University. The network has also provided the base for new research projects like the MOOC project, and the research project on Brain and Learning that will start 2016.

Pedagogic Development Work

Course development: Leader of the programming teacher team, the Department of Information Technology, division of Scientific Computing
In my function as the leader of the teacher team, I can connect my research to teaching. Since I visit research conferences on computing education, I have for example taken part in workshops on new technologies like IDEs for novices (BlueJ, Greenfot), and Android app programming and brought some of these technologies back to our campus courses. Further, when I read research articles that are relevant for the teacher team, I discuss them with my colleagues. One example is an article on how to best support teaching assistants (TAs) in programming courses.

Invited speaker to scientific pedagogic seminars
I have been invited to a number of universities to talk about my research, specifically after the press release of my thesis in March 2009. Below is the list of universities:
